The study was conducted from December 2018 to May 2019 in order to develop a plastic shredder and extruder machine, which can produce different shapes depending on the molder, from shredded, extruded, melted and molded plastics. Specifically, the study aimed to: (1) design and construct a plastic shredder and extruder machine; (2) test and evaluate the machine performance and functionality in terms of power of the shredder for different kinds of plastics, weight of the shredded plastic after a specific time, time the heater melts the plastic, and time of the extruder in extruding the melted plastics; and (3) assess the perception of the end-user on the design of the plastic shredder and extruder machine in terms of the efficiency of the machine, appropriateness of the design, environmental safety, and marketing potential of the machine.
Plastic shredder and extruder machine produced different shapes depending on the molder used. The researchers evaluated the machine in terms of the performance of the system, like the number of plastics to be consumed to produce a one product, the functionality, power consumption and reliability of the machine. Based on the results of the testing and evaluation, the shredder cannot accept thick and large plastics. Therefore, the thick plastics must be pre-cut before dropping it to the shredder. The band heater must be pre-heated to 210 degree Celsius. Average processing time is around 30 minutes, depending on the number of plastics to be shredded and extruded, and the size of the molder.
