Summary, etc. Shipbuilding is the construction of ships and other floating vessels. It normally takes place in a specialized facility known as a shipyard. Shilbuilders, also calle shipwrights, follow a specialized occupation that traces its roots to before recorded history. Ship construction and repair rank among the most hazardous industries in the world. Shipbuilding and repair is one of the three most hazardous industries. While materials, construction methods, tools and equipment and emphasis on safety and health have significantly improved the lot of the shipyard worker, the fact remains that throughout the world each year workers die or are seriously injured while employed in the construction, maintenance and operation and is used in various colleges and universities around the world.
